Plymouth Youth Sailing (PYS) works with communities to help develop self-confidence, aspirations, communication skills and healthy lifestyle though challenging (outdoor) activities. We target communities who are disadvantaged socially, physically or with special educational needs.
The project delivers its objectives through permanent staff members and a pool of over 25 volunteers who come from the local area.
Programmes are based on the ideas of the participants, though consultation during activity, Facebook groups and questionnaires.
PYS was formed in 2001 through a partnership between West Devon Watersports Trust and Plymouth Outdoor Education centre. It now stands as its own organisation
The programmes we deliver are adventure-based, designed to challenge and motivate our participants by developing leadership and personal effectiveness. We particularly focus on supporting young people who have struggled in the formal education system and also young people who are socially isolated.
Our aim is to act as a catalyst in the development of young people, enabling them to make a full contribution to their community, and to inspire and educate young people, who would not otherwise be reached, and help them on their journey to reaching full potential.
Plymouth Youth Sailing is acknowledged by Plymouth City Council’s Youth Service as a high quality provider of activity for young people and takes an active role in the promotion of both youth & play work by participating in youth focused initiatives. We have been developing our skill base to work with young people with special needs and have become an approved provider for Plymouth City Council and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).
PYS has a long established relationships with voluntary youth sector providers, who work specifically in the most disadvantaged areas of Plymouth. Some of our most successful and rewarding work comes from our partnerships within this sector.
PYS is governed by a management committee that comprises of professionals from the youth and education spheres. They are representatives of our network of volunteers (adults and young people) but most importantly it includes young people who bring forward ideas and suggestions from their peer group. The core staff and volunteers are trained and experienced in the delivery of a variety of programmes targeting young people as well as specific outdoor activity qualifications.
We hold a number of quality and safety awards:
- Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Recognised Training Centre status. The RYA inspects us annually to ensure the quality and safety of our provision.
- RYA Sailability which is the RYA’s national programme enabling people with disabilities to try sailing and take part regularly. It’s the perfect sport to feel tranquillity and freedom on the water, or progress your skills and become competitive.
- Adventurous Activity Licence Authority certificate. This certificate is awarded by the Health and Safety Executive and also requires a yearly inspection ensuring PYS complies with rigid safety guidelines.
- Plymouth City Council’s ‘good practice’ award. This is given to sport organisations, delivering to the council’s guidelines and ethos and is assessed yearly.
